DESCRIPTION
Antoni Gaudí designed and built these two pavilions for his friend and patron, Eusebi Güell i Bacigalupi, between 1884 and 1887. He was inspired by the works of Hercules and the book “L’Atlàntida”, written by Jacint Verdaguer. The whole complex is a tribute to Güell’s father-in-law, the Marquis of Comillas, Antonio López, who died recently. The entrance has two buildings: stables and a house for the caretaker. These two buildings are connected by a gateway with a large metal dragon and a column crowned with an orange tree, representing the Garden of the Hesperides and the dragon that protects it.
The buildings are an early Gaudí project, with an orientalist design on the façades, in the Mudejar tradition. The walls are made of walling and bricks and the structure of the stable already has parabolic arches, as in his future projects.
Our work consisted of a 3D scanning to achieve a point cloud to be able to draw the pavilions completely, as a first stage for their restoration. We also analysed the construction system, carried out a pathology diagnosis and provided advice for the forthcoming restoration of the buildings.
